HelpDesk Template in SharePoint 2010

I know that a SharePoint upgrade to 2010 is in my future.  Right now I have been using the HelpDesk Template for about 9 months and it seems to be working well.  I am a little worried about what is going to happen if my organization does not want to deal with the templates in 2010.  I was reading an article on Technet and it sounds like you can get the templates to work, but you will may need some admin support to get it to work.  According to the article, Microsoft will not be providing new templates for 2010 and the .stp files will not work if you want to create new sites after the upgrade.  There is also a note that some customers are not able to create new HelpDesk sites after the upgrade also.  You can convert the .stp file to a .wsp file manually. To do this, in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Office SharePoint Server 2007, create a site based on the template, and then upgrade the site to 2010. Then, follow this procedure:

On the Site Actions menu in the site, click Site Settings.
On the Site Settings page, under Site Actions, click Save site as Template.
On the Save as Template page, enter a file name and Template name and then click OK.
The site template is saved as a WSP file to the Solutions Gallery for that site collection and you can create new sites based on that solution. TechSolutions has already converted some of these templates to 2010. http://techsolutions.net/Blog/tabid/65/EntryId/17/Fab-40-Templates-for-MOSS-2010.aspx. The help desk template is also downloadable from Microsoft on their free templates for Government page here.
